On the Averaging of the Absorption Coefficient in Thermal Radiation Transfer Problems

The article examines methods for calculating averaged absorption coefficients when numerically solving thermal radiation transfer problems with abrupt changes in optical thickness. Comparative calculations are provided for a test problem modeling the compression of a spherical layered system by shock waves. This problem is quite complex for calculating averaged absorption coefficients, since the optical thickness varies over a very wide range during shock compression. Different methods for averaging absorption coefficients are compared. Analysis of the methods for calculating averaged coefficients is facilitated by the fact that, for this problem, consistent averaged ranges have been analytically obtained, allowing spectral calculations to be performed in a single-group approximation.
