Abstract <p>Growing evidence suggests the specific systems for emotional information maintenance and processing in working memory, highlighting the role of cognitive domains in emotional awareness. The question of neural basis of social-emotional processing in working memory remains open. We hypothesized that the neural systems supporting working memory for emotional processing may rely on shared ‘core’ networks differing in ‘hubs’ subserving the specific task, for instance social context processing. We analyzed EEG functional connectivity in source space during the maintenance of neutral, emotional, and socio-emotional information in working memory in adults. Results showed lower accuracy in socio-emotional condition compared to the neutral condition. The lower level of connectivity was observed between: 1) left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and precuneus comparing to both neutral and emotional conditions, 2) left inferior frontal gyrus and temporoparietal gyrus comparing to neutral condition, 3) right inferior frontal gyrus and precuneus comparing to emotional condition lacking social context. The correlation analysis with the scales of Emotion Regulation Questionnaire revealed that the subjects habitually implemented cognitive reappraisal strategy were characterized by higher functional connectivity between the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and precuneus in socio-emotional condition, that may be interpreted as more effective cognitive control. The usage of expressive suppression strategy correlated with higher connectivity between the anterior insula and precuneus, dorsolateral and ventromedial cortices, anterior insula and ventromedial cortex, but lower connectivity between the dorsolateral cortex and temporo-parietal junction, suggesting possible salience up-regulation.</p>
