Analysis of Behavior-Driven Development: A Thematic Synthesis

Behavior-driven development (BDD) has been gaining relevance since its inception due to its focus on specifying system behavior through concrete examples, facilitating collaboration, and ensuring that development aligns with business requirements. However, it is essential to understand the scenarios in which BDD has been used as a development method and to provide a documented overview of its implementation. This research offers a thematic synthesis of BDD, elucidating its challenges, benefits, and implications in software development. The study identifies prevalent trends and common themes in BDD adoption and implementation by drawing insights from various sources. The primary objective was to analyze BDD’s characteristics, scenarios, benefits, and challenges in software projects while furnishing actionable insights to bolster BDD’s adaptability among development teams. This work adheres to the guidelines of search-based software engineering to compile 23 studies in four academic databases, and a robust method for thematic synthesis is presented. The results underscore BDD’s value as a methodology bridging the technical-non-technical stakeholder divide, ensuring close alignment of software development with business objectives. While initial adoption hurdles may exist, the study reveals substantial long-term benefits regarding software quality and stakeholder satisfaction. Future research avenues should prioritize developing more efficient training programs and tools to streamline BDD adoption across diverse development environments. This study contributes to the comprehension of BDD by offering a thematic synthesis of its application in software development, explaining critical success factors, and proffering recommendations to address common challenges.
