<b>Abstract</b>— <p>The paper presents an attempt to develop a general approach to the mathematical simulation of binary coalescence process occurring due to the sedimentation of droplets in a gravitational field. This approach is based on the population balance equation and can subsequently be applied to predict the conditions for the separation of water–oil emulsions. Four different methods for calculating binary coalescence efficiency are compared using experimental curves of change in water content over time in water–oil emulsions measured at different temperatures.</p>
