Production of a Ti–(30–46) at % Zr–9 at % Nb Alloy in an Argon Arc Furnace

Abstract
The production of an advanced biomedical Ti–(30–46)Zr–9Nb (at %) alloys by melting in an argon arc furnace and subsequent homogenizing annealing is demonstrated. Peculiarities of the microhardness, phase composition, and structure of the ingots are studied. After melting, the structure of the alloy is shown to be mainly granular with dendritic areas consisting of β-Ti at the expense of a large content of β stabilizers. Annealing of the alloy at 1000°C for 2 h is noted to result in leveling the chemical composition, which leads to the destruction of the dendritic structure.
