Fracture of a VT8-1 Titanium Alloy during Cold Creep

Abstract—A VT8-1 alloy (Ti–Al–Mo–Zr–Sn–Si system) is subjected to tensile creep tests at 20°C and stresses of 900–1000 MPa, which are close to the yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength of the alloy. Fracture nuclei are found to be brittle facets oriented almost perpendicular to the loading axis. The results of a comprehensive study using transmission and scanning electron microscopy demonstrate that brittle cracks develop in the (0001) plane.
