Influence of TiCN on the Structure and Wear Resistance of the Metal Deposited by Spraying a Fe–Cr–Nb–B–C Flux-Cored Electrode

Abstract

The microstructure, hardness, and wear resistance of the metal deposited using flux-cored electrodes of three compositions differed in the carbon, titanium, and nitrogen contents (Fe–Cr–Nb–B–C is the base charge composition) are studied. Nitrogen is introduced into the charge of one of the electrodes as part of titanium carbonitride TiCN. Titanium carbonitride is shown to dissociate during spraying, promoting microalloying of the deposited metal with titanium, carbon, and nitrogen. Alloying with titanium results in the formation of needle-like chromium carbides. Nitrogen stabilizes the austenite structure, causing a decrease in the hardness and wear resistance of the deposited metal under the given spraying conditions. Titanium microalloying is found to increase the hardness of the deposited metal to 67 HRC and a decrease in the wear rate to 2.69 g/h.
