Residual Stress Formation in Surface Layers and Coatings

Abstract
The residual stresses in the surface layers of metal alloys after ion nitriding, in thermal barrier and refractory-metal-based coatings, and in TRIP steels are analyzed using a unique technique based on the elastic anisotropy of crystals. The compressive residual stresses (less than 600 MPa) having formed in multilayer (n = 120 layers) Nb/Mo magnetron coatings 800 μm thick are shown to be lower than those in monolayer 10-μm-thick Nb and Mo coatings.
