Abstract

Trawl and diving surveys at depths of 0.5–650.0 m have revealed that whip sculpin Gymnocanthus intermedius in Peter the Great Bay, located in the south of Primorye, lives at depths from 1 to 60 m in summer. In northern Primorye, the species was only sporadically recorded in the studied bathymetric range of 19–650 m and only at depths of 23–30 m, where it is represented by individuals with a total length of over 17 cm. In both areas, it reaches a length of no less than 23 cm. In Peter the Great Bay, aggregations of whip sculpin are observed mainly in the southwestern part. Only small-sized juveniles up to 10 cm long are found at depths of less than 10 m, which are intensively heated to 14–23°C. Longer individuals prefer the bathymetric range of 10–40 m. They occur at 3.3–17.2°C and are concentrated mainly in waters with a temperature of 6.1–15.0°C.
