Abstract

The development and maintenance of a stable population of the Kildin cod (Gadus morhua kildinensis) in Lake Mogilnoye have been analyzed based both on our original and literature data. Atlantic cod (G. morhua) have acquired new characteristics, manifested in the consistent uniformity of coloration in mature individuals, head enlargement, development of polysensory organs, territorial behavior, and spatial differentiation of fish of different ages. Thus, the Kildin cod from Lake Mogilnoye acquired a complex of traits that has enabled the species to adapt to the specific conditions of the lake.
