Abstract
The four-eyed sleeper, Bostrychus sinensis Lacépède, 1801, has highly commercial value in fisheries, however its reproductive characteristics in the wild are poorly known in Vietnam, especially Xuan Thuy National Park in northern Vietnam, which is a hotspot of conservation since it is home to many commercial fish, consisting of Bostrychus sinensis. Therefore, this study attempted to describe reproductive indices of B. sinensis in Xuan Thuy National Park using 210 samples collected monthly from 2018 to 2019. The gonadosomatic index of females and males is highest in May (11.23 and 0.21%) and lowest in December (0.51 and 0.06%). On the contrary, the hepatosomatic index of females was lowest in May and September (2.14%), and highest in December (3.96%). For males, the hepatosomatic index value ranged from 1.7% (May) to 3.03% (March). The present study also identified the absolute potential fecundity of females ranging from 4215 to 28 643 oocytes; the relative potential fecundity was between 244 to 639 oocyte/g. Thus, these findings reveal that the four-eyed sleeper in the study site is batch spawner, with a peak in May, and in September. In addition, this work provides reproductive data on the B. sinensis, thus contributing to the conservation and proper exploitation of four-eyed sleeper populations in Vietnam.
