Abstract
Two gravid females and one maturing female of Oxynotus centrina were recently caught in the Sea of Marmara. Total length of the maturing and gravid females 482, 534 and 553 mm, respectively. Considering the examined average diameter and weight of the oocytes, as well as gonadosomatic index and hepatospomatic index values, and ovarian and uterine morphology, it can be suggested that the both gravid females are in “stage 3a” which means capable of reproducing; however, the gonadosomatic index and the presence of small follicles of different sizes in the ovary indicates that the third specimen is a developing female which is close to maturation or “stage 2.” Present findings were shown that an area-based conservation approach is necessary for the efficient protection of O. centrina in the Sea of Marmara.
