Abstract <p>The saddle-headed moray eel, <i>Gymnothorax sagmacephalus</i> Böhlke, 1997 is reported for the first time from the Indian Ocean, based on a single specimen collected from the Colachel fishing harbour, southwest coast of India, Arabian Sea. The species have been known only from Japan, Taiwan and China till date. The taxonomic identification characteristics of the species and its inclusion to the molecular analysis are discussed below.</p>
