Abstract

The structural evolution and calorimetric response of nickel processed by high-pressure torsion at 20 and 150°C have been investigated. The number of heat release peaks on the DSC curve depends on the deformation temperature. A single peak is observed after deformation at 20°C, and it is attributed to low-temperature recrystallization of microcrystallites. Multiple peaks emerge after deformation at 150°C. The dominant peak corresponds to low-temperature recrystallization initiated at dynamically recrystallized grains with low dislocation number density. A secondary peak at higher temperatures results from primary recrystallization, which is driven by thermally activated nucleation and growth. The conditions necessary for forming a stable bimodal structure have been identified. In this structure, low-temperature recrystallization occurs after high-temperature deformation. Nucleation centers progress from microcrystallites to dynamically recrystallized grains.
