Benthic Cyanobacteria as Producers of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins in Lake Baikal
摘要
Benthic cyanobacteria were analyzed in Lake Baikal using a set of methods. In the genome of Limnofasciculus baicalensis, a dominant species among Lake Baikal benthos, we detected the saxitoxin biosynthetic gene cluster consisting of 24 genes. The sxtA gene fragment of saxitoxin gene cluster of L. baicalensis was identical to the sequences from natural samples. L. baicalensis contained both complete and partial sequences of core genes, transporter genes, and tailoring genes encoding adaptation enzymes. Production of paralytic shellfish toxins by strain L. baicalensis was not detected, possibly due to the partial loss of gene fragments in two genes. Saxitoxin and its analogues were identified in biofilms; they were characterized by the high toxin content.
