Abstract <p>Bacteria of the genus <i>Azospirillum</i> inhabit various ecological niches worldwide. They are commonly used as biofertilizers, because they promote the growth and productivity of numerous plant species, including many agriculturally important ones. We review the available information about the responses of <i>Azospirillum</i> bacteria to chemical and mechanical stimuli, and we briefly describe the mechanisms underlying the transformation of the incoming signals into appropriate responses promoting adaptation of azospirilla in soil, in particular in associations with plants.</p>
