Discovery of Montagnula graminicola (Didymosphaeriaceae) from India
摘要
The genus Montagnula (family Didymosphaeriaceae; order Pleosporales; class Dothideomycetes; phylum Ascomycota) is known to be a common colonizer of terrestrial habitats with varied geographic and host distribution. During the present study, a species of this genus was isolated from a high mountain pass in the trans-Himalayan region, located in Ladakh, India. Taxonomic identification of the genus was done by its morphological and molecular characterization. The isolate was recovered as a sterile mycelium and thus subjected to various sporulation-inducing methods. Nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analysis confirmed its position as M. graminicola. So far, the species has only been reported from Italy (on dead stem of grass). Therefore, the present isolate represents another record of its global distribution and marks its first report from the Indian subcontinent. Detailed morphological descriptions, color photographs and molecular phylogeny of the isolate are provided.
