Study of the Effect of Virulent Bacteriophages on Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 Bacterial Biofilms by Scanning Electron Microscopy

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most common agents causing nosocomial infections. Due to its strong multidrug resistance (including antibiotic resistance), ability to form durable biofilms, and invulnerability to the host immune system, infections caused by P. aeruginosa often lead to generalized inflammation and sepsis. In our study, we selected the Pseudomonas phages of two species: PB1 and phiKZ, for structural investigation of P. aeruginosa (PAO1) biofilm–phage interactions. PAO1 biofilms were exposed to phage PB1 and phiKZ for up to 24 h. The biofilm-producing ability of the samples decreased significantly after phage treatment. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the damaged structure of phage-treated biofilms, with bacterial cells exhibiting deformation. Both phages showed good development prospects for antibiofilm phage therapy.
