Development of a Phosphate-Accumulating Microbial Community in a Sequencing Batch Reactor under Cyclic Alteration of Anaerobic and Anoxic Conditions

Abstract—
A stable denitrifying, phosphorus- and nitrogen-removing microbial community was obtained by long-term cultivation in a sequencing batch bioreactor under cyclic alteration of anaerobic and anoxic conditions. After two months of operation, the dominant forms were phosphate-accumulating bacteria Dechloromonas and glycogen-accumulating bacteria Сandidatus Competibacter, which were present in approximately equal amounts and constituted together ~60% of the community.
