Abstract <p>Slime deposition has been a major problem in paper industry, as this adversely affects the production in terms of quality and costs. To solve this problem, it is crucial to have deep knowledge of the nature of slime formed on the walls of a paper mill equipment. In this paper, samples of slime collected from two paper mills in the North Central region of Vietnam were studied with respect to slime structure and composition, specifically microbial community, extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs), and major chemical components. The formation of biofilms was also assessed by investigating the growth dynamics of slime microorganisms. Study on slime structure showed the presence of cellulose fibers and microorganisms of varied shape and organization, such as single/cluster of rod/spherical cells. The slimes were found to harbor various microorganisms, including <i>Priestia megaterium, Rhizobium, Bacillus infantis, Brevibacillus agri, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus velezensis, Microbacterium sediminis</i>, <i>Sphingobacterium thalpophilum</i>, and <i>Desulfomicrobium</i> sp. Chemically, the slime consisted of exopolysaccharides (158.52‒346.92 mg/g), proteins (5.54‒185.27 mg/g), aliphatic compounds (1.32‒3.97%), starch (0.6‒1.12%), and cellulose (27.42‒76.56%). The slime accumulated metals, e.g. iron (4327.25 mg/kg) and aluminum (1028 mg/kg). During biofilm formation by slime microorganisms, the cell density peaked after 6‒8 days.</p>
