Electrical Resistivity of Liquid Hafnium at Temperatures up to 5000 K under Low and Increased Pressure

Abstract

Comparative experiments were performed with rapid heating (5–10 µs) of hafnium foil by an electric current pulse both in water (low pressures) and between thick plates of TF-5 glass (under increased pressures, estimated to be no more than 10 kbar). A comparative analysis of the results showed that under pressure, the electrical resistivity of liquid hafnium increases monotonically with increasing temperature, while at low external pressures, it decreases monotonically in the same temperature range. The result differs from the electrical resistivity behavior of liquid carbon, which remains constant in the temperature range 5000–9000 K (at approximately the same pressure level). The existence of linear dependences of the density of hafnium and zirconium on the specific energy (enthalpy) of pulsed current heating is noted for the solid and liquid phases.
