On the Solid Product Formed in Liquid Hexafluorobenzene during Gamma Irradiation

Abstract
Long-term gamma irradiation of degassed liquid hexafluorobenzene (HFB) in a sealed glass ampoule yielded a dark-brown solid product. The maximum yield (100%) was achieved at a total dose of 2.6 × 107 Gy. The product was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements. As a result of the studies, it was established that the composition of solid HFB almost does not differ from the composition of the unirradiated liquid HFB. As a result of irradiation, the bonds of some HFB rings are broken, but there are no long CF2 chains in solid HFB. Solid HFB is a hydrophobic material; the water contact angle of its flat surface is 142°–146°.
