Electronic Absorption Spectra of Gaseous Chlorine over a Wide Temperature Range

Abstract
Electronic absorption spectra of gaseous chlorine were recorded in the range of 8333–50 000 cm–1 (1200–200 nm) and the temperature range from 273 to 1473 K. The spectrum consists of a single broad absorption band in the range of approximately 20 000–43 500 cm−1 (500–230 nm). With increasing temperature, the intensity of the absorption band decreases and its maximum shifts (~1 nm per 100°) toward shorter wavelengths, with the band shape changing insignificantly.
