Modification of Surface Properties of Plastic Filaments in a Three-Electrode Plasma Tube

Abstract
The modification of the surface properties of thermoplastic polymers, in particular, polylactic acid (PLA) plastic filaments, by treating them in a three-electrode plasma tube with low-temperature argon plasma of a self-sustained atmospheric-pressure space glow discharge with a dielectric barrier has been experimentally demonstrated. The PLA filament is continuously pulled at a speed of 4 mm/s through the discharge plasma at a discharge current of 0.7–3 mA. It is shown that the contact angle of water decreases from 85° to 44° and the surface free energy increases from 32.28 to 56.84 mJ/m2.
