Production of Carbon Nanostructures in an Electric Arc Discharge Immersed in Liquid Hydrocarbons

Abstract
The formation of carbon nanostructures is studied in an arc discharge between copper electrodes immersed in kerosene, with plasma-forming gas supplied to the inter-electrode gap. Argon was selected as one. The presence of argon makes it possible to maintain the arc discharge, even in liquids with a low viscosity coefficient. The carbon formed during the decomposition of hydrocarbons was mainly deposited on the cathode. Carbon nanostructures of circular and “chain” shape were found in the sediments. The round-shaped nanostructures are of the order of 150–200 nm in size and consist of two, or three such formations. Some spherical formations are connected to each other and form a linear bundle of connected circular formations.
