Gall Midges (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Province: Fauna, Trophic Relationships, Features of Biology and Economic Importance

The first overview of gall midges from St. Petersburg and Leningrad Province is given. A total of 152 gall-midge species of 61 genera were identified, of which 71 species and 17 genera are new to the region, including 18 species new to Russia: Anthodiplosis rudimentalis Kieffer, 1901, Arthrocnodax galiobiae Fedotova, 1997, Contarinia heraclei (Rübsaamen, 1889), C. kanervoi Barnes, 1958, C. pilosellae Kieffer, 1896, C. rubicola Kieffer, 1909, C. senecionis (Rübsaamen, 1891), C. valerianae (Rübsaamen, 1890), Dasineura miki (Kieffer, 1909), D. holosteae (Kieffer, 1909), D. schulzei Rübsaamen, 1917, D. traili (Kieffer, 1909), Jaapiella inulicola Fedotova, 1993, Lasioptera francoisi (Kieffer, 1901), Lestodiplosis fratricida (Kieffer, 1909), Macrolabis achilleae Rübsaamen, 1893, Mycodiplosis tremulae Kieffer, 1895, and Stenodiplosis geniculati Reuter, 1895. Gall midges were found on 116 plant species belonging to 77 genera from 32 families. Out of the 39 genera of phytophagous gall midges, 21 (53.8%), including 3 monotypic genera (Anthodiplosis, Trilobomyia, and Giraudiella), are specific to particular plant genera. The bulk of the fauna consists of the boreal Western Palaearctic and Euro-Siberian species. Features of food specialization, gall inducing, biology, life cycles, and distribution are described.
