Abstract <p>The data obtained provide an assessment of variability of the COI gene region for diagnostics of <i>Diaspidiotus perniciosus</i> (Comstock, 1881). Nucleotide sequences were obtained for the first time for five armored scale species distributed in the Palaearctic: <i>D. ostreaeformis</i> (Curtis, 1843), <i>D. slavonicus</i> (Green, 1934), <i>D. danzigae</i> Kuznetsov, 1976, <i>D. zonatus</i> (Frauenfeld, 1868), and <i>D. caucasicus</i> (Borchsenius, 1935). The COI gene region is characterized by a rather high degree of polymorphism and the presence of a barcoding gap, as shown by genetic distances determined within the Kimura two-parameter model. The analysis of 7 geographic populations of <i>D. perniciosus</i> has revealed 5 haplotypes, 4 of which are found in Russia. The results obtained are of practical significance for diagnostics of <i>D. perniciosus</i> by DNA barcoding.</p>
