Abstract

The lower temperature limits of flame propagation of mixtures of oil vapor with oxygen and nitrogen in the presence of liquid oil have been determined. Experiments have shown that the lower temperature limit differs significantly from that expected for oxygen. One of the reasons for the discrepancy between the limits is that in the presence of an ignition source and a large amount of oxygen in the gas phase, it is possible to initiate diffusion combustion of the film of liquid oil present on the internal surfaces of the vessel. The flame along this film reaches the main mass of oil. As a result of further diffusion combustion of oil, an increase in pressure is observed, which is significantly greater than that expected during flame propagation through the gas phase.
