Gross Primary Production Estimation of the Leningrad Region Ecosystem Based on OCO-2 Satellite Data

In the Russian Federation, the carbon test sites, including representative ecosystems characteristic of the territory of our country, have been established to implement climate-active gas monitoring measures and study greenhouse gas absorption potential. Quantifying gross primary production (GPP) and understanding the processes that influence it are necessary to study CO2 absorption by the northwest Russian ecosystem. This is one of the goals of the Ladoga carbon test site, planned for construction in 2024–2025 in Leningrad Region. GPP for Leningrad Region in 2014–2022 is determined using solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) data measured by an OCO-2 satellite equipment. GPP is found to exhibit an annual cycle with maximum values in June–July, consistent with the results of independent studies. Over the period under consideration, the GPP growth rate was positive and amounted to 0.08 ± 0.02 gC m–2 day–1 year–1. The Ladoga carbon site absorption capacity obtained in this study amounted to 0.1–2.3 ktCO2 year–1. The obtained results can be used as a priori estimates for ground-based measurements at the Ladoga site, as well as for independent estimates of CO2 absorption potential on the Russian territory.
