Comparison of the Images of Hotspot and Mantle Plume of Various Types in the Lithospheric Magnetic Anomalies Field

Spatial distribution maps of lithospheric magnetic anomalies for three hotspot regions—Hawaiian, Afar, and Icelandic—have been analyzed to address the interdisciplinary problem of hotspot and mantle plume interactions with the lithosphere. Geomagnetic field measurements obtained by the CHAMP satellite at altitudes of 280–260 km in 2010, its final year of operation, when its orbital altitude was at its lowest, are used to construct magnetic images of plumes and hotspots. A previously created database of anomalous magnetic field parameters for the Ethiopian and Icelandic regions has been expanded, and new data have been obtained for the part of the Pacific Ocean containing the Hawaiian hotspot. Maps of lithospheric magnetic anomalies have been constructed for the central Pacific Ocean, the East African Rift Zone, and the North Atlantic. It is shown that magnetic images of hotspots of different types, oceanic Hawaiian, continental Ethiopian, and island Icelandic, are mapped in the lithospheric field in different ways, reflecting the features of tectonic processes that took place previously and are currently developing in the territories under consideration. It has been confirmed that the use of satellite geomagnetic observations in plume-active areas, in conjunction with other regional-scale geological and geophysical data, can add valuable information to the overall study of these tectonic processes.
