The Western media coverage of China in the 2024 Paris Olympics: a corpus-based critical discourse analysis
摘要
This study draws on a synergy of corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis to scrutinize the Western media coverage of China in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The findings reveal that the Western media mainly focus on competition outcomes in their coverage of China. China is depicted as a country that won medal, gold medals in particular, in various Olympic sports events. Such portrayal might be possibly attributed to the general laws of Olympic reporting that the coverage should be based on factual records of the competitions. Besides competition outcomes, the Western media also reported China in a distorted and/or negative manner around the doping issue, the Taiwan question and human rights concerns, which could be largely explained by deeply-rooted prejudice and preconceptions about socialist China and the dichotomy of the East and the West in the Western media coverage of the Olympics.
