From screen to speech: enhancing business English-oral vocabulary skills through movies among learners of commerce
摘要
Discipline-specific diction is the need of the hour for aspiring professionals and entrepreneurs of various fields to face the challenges of the real world. The present study investigated the effectiveness of incorporating movies into teaching oral vocabulary skills in business English among the first-year undergraduate English as a Second Language (ESL) learners of commerce. It also examined their perceptions of using movies as a supplementary pedagogical aid to develop vocabulary. The researcher employed a pretest–posttest design among the participants, and their proficiency was evaluated using the speech recognition Application Programming Interface (API), called “Speechace”. The intervention involved screening of curated movie clips followed by specific interactive activities on business English-oral vocabulary. The audio-visual content was curated according to the proficiency of the learners. The results revealed a significant improvement in the oral vocabulary skills of the learners, and the responses to the questionnaire were also positive. The methods and results contribute to the research on innovative methods for teaching English vocabulary in business and underscore the potential of multimedia resources in language education.
