<p>Nearly 30 years have passed since Samuel Huntington published his seminal book, <i>The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order</i>. In the present piece, I acknowledge that many of Huntington’s predictions about Islam 30 years ago appear to have been stunningly prophetic. Muslim-majority countries do experience much higher levels of religious conflict than non-Muslim countries, just as Huntington predicted. Furthermore, it appears that the dysfunctions plaguing the Muslim world have arisen precisely for the reason that Huntington believed they would, namely the lack of separation of Islam and state. However, what Huntington missed is a matter of crucial importance. It is not that Islam inherently rejects political secularism and is, for that reason, uniquely prone to violence. Rather, the way Islam has been exploited and manipulated by political leaders in Muslim-majority countries, by both Islamist and pseudo secularist regimes, is responsible for producing their disproportionately high levels of violent religious hostilities.</p>
