<p>Kofi Annan was the most significant and influential Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). He was the first sub-Saharan African to hold the position of Secretary-General and to rise through the ranks of the UN system. His deeply held credo was that service with the UN was more than just a job: it was a calling. During his momentous time as Secretary-General from 1997 to 2006, he led the UN with vision and realism on behalf of principles beyond narrow national interests. Annan saw security, development, and human rights as inseparable and fundamental to a more peaceful and just world. He believed that in an age of “problems without passports” the world needed “blueprints without borders” more than ever before. He used the bully pulpit to speak out on specific crises and to mobilize different coalitions that could help the UN to achieve its objectives. He introduced ambitious reforms to strengthen the UN and adapt the organization to the needs of the 21st century.</p>
