摘要

This paper aims to analyze the role of the opposition to LGBT rights in the recent authoritarian turn in Brazil and Central Europe, with an emphasis on Hungary and Poland. Despite their cultural, economic, social, and political differences, an analogous centrality of the opposition to LGBT rights in rhetoric and strategies of political leaders in the three countries is recognizable. Their populist and authoritarian discourses articulate nationalism, patriotism, anticommunism together with a strong deference to the “Christian values.” This paper analyzes how the opposition to LGBT rights has been recently articulated to the extreme-right authoritarian agenda in the three countries. It will focus particularly on “gender ideology” as a buzzword that not only creates a common enemy able to unite different conservative and extreme-right groups but also places the opposition to sexual and reproductive rights at the core of the authoritarian/populist political projects implemented in the three countries.
