<p>The emergence of new forms of religion in some parts of sub-Saharan African presents a conundrum, as the brewing of faith meets dire social needs and development. Self-anointed <i>prophets</i> promise wealth and good health in their preaching, a practice which is accompanied by calls for money and other material possessions as offerings. The activities of these individuals violate the right to development, as well as social, economic and cultural rights. Followers make huge sacrifices to the prophets to supposedly win divine favour. The author of this article has first-hand experience on the activities of the so-called prophets.</p>
