<p>Power has been understood from a wide variety of theoretical perspectives. Is it an agentic force exercised within interaction; the cultural background which shapes our behaviors and subjectivity; or vested in the hierarchical, structural arrangement of roles or identities? Synthesizing the voluminous theorizing on power, this paper attempts to move towards clarity on the subject by proposing a model to analyze how social actors access power within moments of contention to shape social outcomes. The model focuses on four dimensions—context, sources, situatedness, and alignment—which are then used to examine a power struggle between a social movement and their corporate opponents. This analysis demonstrates the utility of the model by showing how each dimension contributed to the ultimate outcome, taking seriously both the background elements of the power struggle as well as the situated interactions between key players.</p>
