<p>Walkability can be approached from multiple perspectives, including environmental, social, and spatial dimensions. This study focuses on the spatial configuration of urban form and how it supports pedestrian movement, particularly for women. Assessing pedestrian accessibility often involves specific space syntax metrics, such as local integration and control, to examine spatial configurations and movement potential. While effective for general analysis, these measures may not fully reflect the spatial experiences of different social groups. Based on the hypothesis that women are more likely to walk in areas where local and global accessibility are balanced, this study introduces a new spatial index called the Women’s Walkability Index. The index highlights locations where neighborhood-scale and city-scale integration work together to support pedestrian movement. Higher scores are assigned where this spatial balance is strongest. Monastir, Tunisia, serves as the case study. A combination of spatial analysis and field observations was used to explore the relationship between spatial layout and women’s presence in public open spaces. Bourguiba Palace received the highest score on the Women’s Walkability Index (WWI) and also demonstrated a consistent presence of women. In contrast, El-Founoun, which received high ratings based on space syntax metrics, which are local integration and control, attracted fewer women. These findings provide insights into how spatial layout can influence walkability and contribute to broader efforts in inclusive urban planning.</p>
