<p>Currently, due to the emergence of new commercial models and the gradual decline of space quality and commercial functions of most traditional commercial districts, traditional commercial districts are facing development stagnation. To better protect and develop traditional commercial districts, the current study investigated two typical spatial sequence districts in China, Tunxi Ancient Street and Liyang In Xiang. The GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) technique was used to track tourists in the districts. The study analysed the characteristics of tourist movements from three perspectives: trajectory lines, kernel density distribution, and movement speed. Based on spatial characteristics, four typical spaces, square space (G), main street space (Z), intersection space (J), and alleyalley space (X), were selected, before behavioural observations were conducted to statistically analyse people’s behaviour in different spatial locations. The study ultimately explored the correlation between tourist stay behaviours and the spatial elements of traditional districts. The results revealed that the form of spatial sequences in districts affects tourists’ tour paths and stay preferences. Visiting and observing behaviour was the main behaviour category of tourists in the traditional districts. The different elements of spatial scenes led to different stay characteristics among tourists. The findings of this study provide insights towards shaping the spatial sequences of traditional commercial districts, the layout of commercial formats, and the protection and renewal of spatial elements. They additionally provide a theoretical basis for enhancing the vitality of district spaces.</p>
