Urban systems, when they conurbate: The diachronic-configurational approach to detect the shifting of centrality in Versilia

The evolution of urban systems rarely follows predictable paths. Conurbations, where multiple sub-systems coalesce, exemplify this subtle complexity by undergoing transformations in size, structure, and centrality. This paper introduces the diachronic-configurational method, combining a six-step process centred on historical analysis and angular segment analysis of the urban network, with a two-fold objective: (a) to propose a rigorous methodological framework grounded in a critical re-elaboration of prior research methods, and (b) to evaluate its effectiveness in Versilia (Italy)—a conurbation formed by merging similarly sized centres. The findings underscore the method’s potential for analysing urban systems, revealing evolutionary processes, and informing planning strategies by identifying former urban centres, current hierarchies, and emerging dynamics. Overall, the diachronic-configurational method offers a valuable tool for interpreting the complex geographies of urban settlements and conurbations, as well as the socio-spatial relationships that shape these communities.
