<p>This article discusses the explosion in the number of children diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and the frequent – and often first-line – use of methylphenidate in France. Here, we consider ADHD as an example of a certain contemporary psychiatry that relies solely on biology and the <i>Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders</i>&#xa0;(DSM). Firstly, we show that a certain scientistic discourse claims to have identified the biological nature of ADHD in order to justify the normative dimension of psychiatry and propose responses appropriate to neoliberalism. Secondly, we show that the ADHD-methylphenidate logic and the DSM in general are linked to the economy. We then go further, showing that this logic transforms the patient into an “entrepreneur-of-the-self”, dear to neoliberalism. We then look at the clinical consequences of this approach, which crushes the subject's desire and prevents them from developing their own saying. Finally, we illustrate with a clinical vignette how psychoanalytic work can be used to treat an ADHD child in greater depth.</p>
