<p>What can Shakespeare’s <i>Henry IV, Part I</i>—a play about a medieval king written on the cusp of modernity—teach us about keeping time today? This article explores how, far from assuming technology’s utility, Shakespeare and his peers worry over the impact that tech-driven time measurement may have on the ways individuals relate to time and to one another within a community. In <i>Henry IV, Part I</i>, Shakespeare questions the ethical implications of how one keeps time and whether conditional, adaptable, task-oriented timekeeping may truly signal sound judgment. Uncovering these anxieties expands our understanding of premodern time. Just as importantly, it raises questions about how our own attachments to time today may keep us from seeing the many ways to navigate time’s passage to be found in premodern texts.</p>
