摘要

The Rhine River is a vital waterway for European hinterland transport, but operational inefficiencies while navigating and in ports, and extreme variations of water levels have hampered its efficiency. The NOVIMOVE project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program, aims to address these challenges by introducing innovative concepts such as the Smart River Navigation System, Modular Mobile Terminals, Innovative Vessels, and Cargo Consolidation. This paper evaluates the potential impact of these innovations on container inland waterway transport (IWT) along the Rhine-Alpine corridor. The basis of this evaluation emanates from key academic contributions addressing the technical, operational, and economic feasibility of these innovations. Key results indicate that by 2030, the identified innovations could attract around 330,000 TEUs to IWT, reduce CO2 emissions by over 36 million kilograms, and lower transport costs by 8.7%. The innovations are also expected to increase IWT’s modal share by 8.4% and freight volumes by 8%. These findings underscore the potential of innovative solutions to modernize European container IWT, enhancing its competitiveness, sustainability, and operational efficiency. Further optimization and practical implementation of these solutions could yield even greater benefits, positioning container IWT as a key player in sustainable freight logistics.
