Digital twins: digitalization of automated container terminals in seaports

Digital twins (DT) is a new-generation information technology, which integrates data from various physical systems to create a replica model that can be used by a simulator to analyze and optimize the physical entity it represents. Automated container terminals (ACT) require the smooth operation of different resources through the interaction of various information systems to improve terminal efficiency. Achieving dynamic data management across multi-resource couplings, to manage complex ACT operations, has always been a challenge. While previous studies have made valuable contributions to the optimization of terminal operations, a dynamic data management system across multi-resource couplings is still missing. To that effect, we introduce a DT-based ACT data management system. The data management mechanism including the operational modalities and data management requirements of ACT operations are analyzed. Next, we build the DT model and its framework for managing dynamic ACT operational data. The model consists of four components: data storage, data interaction, data visualization, and data security. The system achieves synchronous mapping of operational processes, integrated data management, and integration with other systems. Finally, a case study of the ACTs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is developed to demonstrate the practical application and effectiveness of the proposed method.
