摘要

Much has been written about the legend of La Llorona. She has been studied as a moral, antipatriarchal, and anticolonial figure. Although there have been literary and artistic materials linking La Llorona to the environmental crisis for at least fifteen years, she has never been examined in this light in academic scholarship. This essay studies the legend of La Llorona as an ecological figure that is transformed particularly when in contact with the concerns of Latinx groups and Native American nations, specifically the ‘Aha Makav and the concerns of the Water Protector movement. The analysis is based on poetry by María Meléndez and Natalie Diaz. This work traces the evolution of La Llorona from precolonial Mexico to the present in the United States to explain how her cry of grief and desperation is finally metamorphosed into an urgent rallying cry for the environment.
