<p>This paper studies how Maya-Mam youth in Guatemala and Oakland, California, articulated discourses of municipal identity based on contrastive axes of sociocultural distinctions <i>between</i> Maya municipalities in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes. I present ethnographic material and analysis based on fieldwork in the Western Highlands of Guatemala as well as from an English language development class at a continuation high school in East Oakland. This analysis contributes to literature on Maya identity by studying how municipal identity is constructed through contrasts among municipalities in Guatemala. It also contributes to literature on transnational Maya identity by showing how discourses of municipal identity are invoked in Oakland. I argue that these distinctions <i>among</i> municipalities constitute a core way that Maya-Mam communities in Guatemala narrate their identities transnationally. Rather than counterposing this discourse of municipal identity to other forms of Maya identity, I discuss how these discourses of identity are complementary and can be productively understood in relation to one another. Further, I conclude with a discussion of how these Maya youth’s municipal discourses situate them as theorists of identity, in their own right, who can be learned from not merely as objects of study but as theoretically rigorous actors.</p>
