摘要

The debacles of bank failures can be substantial, with ripple effects across virtually all sectors of the economy. These failures expose stakeholders to significant losses and the entire economy to the risk of downturns. To mitigate these costs and minimize their impact, regulatory authorities have implemented failure resolution mechanisms, known as failure resolution toolkits, to achieve orderly bank resolutions. A primary objective is to minimize the effects of bank failures on stakeholders and the broader economy. This study provides a comprehensive documentation of the resolution toolkits used in Nigeria since the inception of the deposit insurance system. These toolkits have been deployed by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) to manage the liquidation process of several hundreds of deposit-taking institutions/banks in Nigeria. The success of the NDIC in effectively resolving bank failures underscores the effectiveness of these toolkits. Similar success has also been recorded by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) under the special resolution regime in the United States. Therefore, other countries’ deposit insurers may adopt these strategies to tackle the challenges of bank failures.
