Adapting to China’s currency valuation shifts: CGTN’s economic public diplomacy on Facebook and Instagram
摘要
The existing literature on China’s economic public diplomacy mainly explores broad strategic approaches, but the connection between China’s economic indicators and its economic messaging remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, this study analyzes CGTN’s economic messaging on its Facebook and Instagram accounts over a five-year period. The research shows how posts on economic topics respond to economic indicators while targeting diverse regional audiences across multilingual accounts. Using computer-assisted methods such as BERTopic modeling, vector autoregression, and Granger causality, this study uncovers links between CGTN’s economic messaging and fluctuations in China’s CNY versus the U.S. dollar. The findings demonstrate that CGTN employs an adaptive economic public diplomacy strategy that adjusts its economic narratives to match real-time economic conditions, highlighting China’s global outreach and influence. By mapping the relationship between economic indicators and state-owned media messaging, this study helps explain how economic dynamism influences China’s economic public diplomacy and how state media effectively use economic trends to support their diplomatic goals.
