Exploring perception-reality gap in nation brand with a new model
摘要
The perception-based nation brand model is widely used, but a significant gap exists between its results and actual reality, highlighting the need for a complementary model. There are notable negative effects of the perception-reality gap on nation branding, such as when a country’s actual standing, including its economic reality, is poor but respondents’ perceptions are positive or vice versa. In these cases, the lag in perception change compared to actual changes in reality can hinder countries from accurately evaluating their branding strategies or developing balanced public diplomacy. Therefore, additional models or indicators that reflect reality are necessary to bridge this gap. While previous studies have addressed this issue, existing models have struggled to objectively show the perception-reality gap due to limitations in brand components and weight distributions. Moreover, no studies have systematically examined this gap on a country-by-country basis. To address these gaps, this study proposes a new model applied to 35 countries and verified through case studies. The model uses a statistical data-based approach with the same dimensions and weightings as a perception-based model, allowing for straightforward one-to-one comparisons and analyses. The perception-reality gap was measured across 35 countries, grouped into five categories based on the size of the gap. The paper also includes case studies of Japan, Poland, and South Korea, where the roles of key national actors and the perception-reality gap in six dimensions of national brand are analyzed. Academically, this study is significant as it presents an improved model for analyzing the gap between perception and reality. Practically, it offers an additional model to complement existing perception-based models and provides a tool for developing more accurate nation branding strategies. Lastly, the paper suggests further methods for improving the practical applicability of this model.
