Performing the Republic: contesting meaning at the 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony
摘要
The Olympic Games have long functioned as more than just a sporting event; they have served as a contested ideological and political space where competing narratives unfold. This study analyzes social media reactions to the 2024 Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony, investigating the dominant themes, sentiment distribution, and corporate influence on public discourse. Using sentiment analysis and K-Means clustering on a dataset of 3000 posts from X, the research identifies key areas of contention. Findings reveal that public sentiment was highly polarized, with a significant portion of users criticizing the perceived commercialization of the ceremony, particularly the role of corporate sponsors such as Samsung, Coca-Cola, and Toyota. Another major source of controversy was the inclusion of artistic elements interpreted as religiously insensitive, which sparked backlash from various Christian communities. Political discourse also shaped reactions, with discussions on French domestic policies and President Emmanuel Macron’s endorsement of the event contributing to further ideological divisions. Additionally, analysis suggests that some X users believed Samsung may have engaged in astroturfing, with promotional posts attempting to counteract negative sentiment.
